When did you first ride a bike – Age 4

How did you get into bikes? – My Dad bought a trackday bike when I was 15 and we went to Mallory on Wednesdays for fun and practise on my first ever go on a race bike and track I beat him so we decided I should have a go at racing!

I had to wait until I my 16th birthday to be old enough to race a 600cc bike, I started 3rd and finished second which was a big sign for us to carry on the rest is just a mass of learning with thrills and spills.

Best Memories – Winning World MCN supersport Moto GP race by over 40secs was a great feeling to be able to control the race from the second lap until the finish with all the guys from the British series and invited riders then being awarded my trophy by Colin Edwards!…. First podium for Kawasaki at Cadwell Park, completing a 125mph lap from a standing start at the Isle of Man!

Hope for 2013 – Good safe consistent year….also come back world Endurance champ, British Champ and TT winner… ;-) Dream big!

Good things come in threes and three has certainly been a lucky number for senior lecturer Paul Brandon and his team of student engineers this year.

On their third attempt in the race for zero emissions bikes (one of the categories in the Isle of Man TT competition series), the University’s bike took bronze in this year’s competition. “In three years we have progressed from a ‘did not finish’ to third place,” Mr Brandon said. “It was also great to see our rider – George Spence – get his first ever podium spot at the TT.”

The race for electric bikes is now in its third year and is becoming an important part of the Isle of Man TT competition, with prestige, trophies and high-stakes prize money attached.

Photo by Dave Kneale, iomtt.com “Our 2011 bike had been designed specifically for the Isle of Man TT course and is the result of thousands of hours of work from the team which included three students Colin Barron, Denis Brossard and Simon Foote,” Mr Brandon explained. “It was designed with a bespoke chassis and rear suspension built for one purpose – to win the TT Zero race while averaging more than 100mph. It is also truly a zero emissions vehicle as it is powered entirely by electricity generated from the wind farms of the team’s title sponsor – Ecotricity.”

Colin Barron, a second year motorcycle engineering student, said: “Working on the bike took up most of my life from January onwards. Although the design work went towards my coursework the practical build was mostly extra-curricular time. It didn’t matter, though, because working on the bike was a really special project. If I wasn’t actually in a lecture or had an immediate deadline you could guarantee you’d find me in the lab working on the bike.”

“Going over to the Isle of Man for the TT was probably the best two weeks of my life!” Colin added. “At the event itself we were right up against the pit lane. I’m mad on motorcycles and was thrilled when I was asked to go along but even I hadn’t realised what a big deal it was until I was there. My Dad had an idea though – he told me ‘You’re going to biking mecca’! Winning third place was fantastic but watching George come in faster than anyone else in the race was just out of this world.”

Frustratingly, the bike’s dashboard display failed just before the start of the race, so Mr Spence was forced to compete without knowing quite how much battery power he had left. “It’s critical that the display shows the rider the information he needs to enable him to push the bike to its limit but to still have enough energy left in the batteries to finish the race,” Mr Brandon said. “We quickly connected a digital volt meter and taped this to the bike with a set of voltages that would at least give George some idea of the battery capacity he had – it was not ideal but that’s the nature of racing – you have to just adapt.”

Photo by Dave Kneale, iomtt.com As it was, when George finally came in a triumphant third at 127mph across the finish line (15mph faster than the next quickest bike), the Kingston crew ran to the winner’s enclosure to congratulate him, only to discover he still had 25 per cent power left in the batteries.

“This meant that if we hadn’t had the dash problem George could have clocked up the same times as the bikes which came in first and second which is a bit frustrating, but it’s very encouraging to know that the bike can perform to its design specification,” Mr Brandon said. “The Americans realise we are a real threat now – we are far and away the quickest university and are a force to be reckoned with. We owe a huge thank you to everyone involved who made this possible.  It was a real team effort and a fantastic finish to the season.”

Best Memories

Win after win in India, 2010 and becoming the International Champion. Every rider going into a big event usually believes they can win. On any given day, you honestly believe that you could be the best, and at the very least, it was validation to me of where I felt I was competitively in the racing world. Winning 7 out of 8 races in Teeside on a 600cc bike for the first time was very special too.

Hopes and thoughts for 2011

2010 was a long season and I learned a lot. My aim this year, as always, is to deliver a good and consistent performance across the year. I will continue my march forward towards the front of the grid, seize the slightest opportunity and do better than last season. Ambitions are certainly higher than last year and work has progressed very well over the winter with targets being met and exceeded but as with every team at this stage of the season, until we all roll our new bikes out at the pre-season tests and, more realistically, turn up for the first qualifying session we won’t know just how competitive we are against the other teams and bikes. What I do know is that I feel ready to deliver. I’m determined to do well and fight hard. I am committed and dedicated. I live to race and my goal is to win. I’m motivated to start another season with some winning momentum.

A tremendous effort has gone in at all levels and a huge thanks to all of you out there who have helped me – who still help me. I am so grateful to my sponsors, present and future and I hope to repay you all with some great and entertaining racing, fastest laps and podium finishes.

2011


2011 with a fully supported effort, will see David return to challenge for the privateer road race title at the TT Isle of Man on a 675cc Triumph and a GSXR 1000 Suzuki.  He will also continue to race in the British Superbike Championship Series in the Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport Championship on board a new Triumph Daytona 675R.  David will also make his first appearance at the famous Daytona 200 race that is held annually at Daytona Beach, Florida, USA in March. The 57 lap,race at the Daytona International Speedway is well known as one of the toughest in American motorcycling.

2010


David returned to race his Triumph 675 in the British Supersport Cup Series. In addition he campaigned the bike as a newcomer on the Word famous TT Mountain Circuit in the Supersport Junior TT races.

After successful testing in Spain, David was invited to represent the UK at the MRF International Championship Madras Race Circuit, India. He was untouchable! With incredible flying Superpoles, David had made it clear that he was there to win. Breaking lap record after lap record, he sealed 6 victories and the title of CHAMPION. As of this publication, David currently holds the lap record of 1.42.763. The Indian press went crazy for him…..

“David Jones, riding a Triumph Daytona 675, explored the limits of his bike’s capabilities to post unbelievable time. More than anything, it was consistency which was truly laudable”. David ended the year with a staggering 11 victories, 3 podium finishes and 11 fastes laps. He also claims the outright lap rcord for a 600cc around his home Coastal Circuit of Anglesey.

2009


Commencing his rookie year in the British Supersport Cup, his mature and thoughtful ride at the final round at Oulton Park saw him bring his bike to the finish line for a 3rd position and a podium finish. This smart, sit back ride clinched David a 5th place overall in the championship and showed the biking world that he and his team are on a mission of passion.

2009 also saw David finish 2nd in the Wirral100 600cc Championship, a tightly contested class where he demonstrated his unparalleled ability to win races and break lap records. He was also awarded the ‘Paul Leonard Memorial Trophy’ by the marshals for his outstanding riding at the final meeting.

2008


Saw David enter the Triumph Triple Challenge. Although enjoyable, it was a steep learning curve for him and challenging to say the least. He kept hard on the pace in all races, gaining a podium finish at Oulton Park and finishing a creditable 9th overall.

2007


David set out to develop himself as a motorcycle racer. September saw him take his first
tentative steps into the Supersport class on board a Triumph 675 where he gained 7 trophies and the title ‘Rider of the Day’ in one weekend.

2005/2006


Age 16, David made a seamless transition to road racing on a Kawasaki ZXR400.

2001


A confident 12year old, David began to compete competitively in motorbike trials and by the age of 15 he held the crown of Youth B trials champion.

Luca Caladora

He began his professional motorcycle racing career in 1984, riding an MBA in the 125cc world championship. In 1986, he won the 125cc World Championship while riding for the Garelli factory racing team. His success earned him a promotion to the 250cc class with Giacomo Agostini‘s Marlboro Yamaha factory racing team in 1986. In 1991, Cadalora switched to the Rothmans Honda factory racing team and won the 250cc World Championship aboard an Erv Kanemoto-tuned Honda NSR250.[1][2] He successfully defended his title with Honda in 1992, claiming his third world championship.

In 1993 he rose to the blue riband 500cc division as Wayne Rainey’s team mate in the Kenny RobertsYamaha team.[2] In three seasons on the Roberts Yamaha, he displayed flashes of brilliance, finishing as high as second to Mick Doohan in 1994. Cadalora rejoined Kanemoto for the 1996 season racing a Honda NSR500. Despite lacking any major sponsors, he still managed to finish the season in third place aboard the Kanemoto-Honda.[1][2]

For the 1997 season, he got a contract as official Yamaha rider in the new Promotor Racing team backed by an Austrian businessman. However,after few races the team failed due to financial problems. WCM rescued the team with the help of a Red Bull sponsorship and Cadalora ended the season in sixth place. At the beginning of the 1998 season, WCM and Cadalora lost Yamaha official support. He returned to the Rainey-Yamaha works team for a few races to replace an injured Jean-Michel Bayle, then helped develop the new MuZ race bike. In 1999 he was again with MuZ. Cadalora finished his career with Kenny RobertsModenas team in 2000.[1][2]

In an era rich in talent with competitors such as Doohan, Rainey and Schwantz, Cadalora was considered an enigma.[3] Capable of defeating the best riders in the world on certain days, he would just as often post poor results. Cadalora lacked consistency at the highest levels of the sport.[3] He retired with 34 Grand Prix victories in three different classes.[1]

Kyle Ryde

Kyle started riding at the age of 6 when we got him a PW50 for the fields which he took to straight away. We then got him a Blata 40cc minimoto to play on and he really enjoyed riding it, so much he wouldn’t get off it. So we decided to jump in at the deep end and get him a racing spec minimoto and have ago at racing. After making a few phone calls we managed to find a real nice bike that was owned by the Moto GP 125cc rider Danny Webb. Kyle ryde minimotos up to 2006 with many wins and fastest laps.

2007 he decided to move onto gearbox bikes with a new Metrakit 50cc to compete in the British Championship. With 30 races in the season Kyle managed 1 win, 27 podiums, 1 new lap Record and 2nd overall in the Championship.

In 2008 he was riding a Metrakit 70cc in the British championship on the same tracks he competed on last year. With 30 races again in the season he managed 1 win, 26 podiums and 2nd overall in the Championship.
